ABOUT
A Note From the Founder
Growing up, I was always the odd one out. The weirdo of the group. My dad called me a Strange Bird and it stuck. This nickname probably projected a specific way of seeing the world onto me and inspired me to think outside of the box.
When I first started Strange Bird Coffee I knew I wanted the most sustainable packaging possible, but as I did my research on plastic free, home compostable packaging, I realized that what I wanted doesn't exist yet. So I pivoted and did something strange. I found a manufacturer that makes a plastic free box that was also home compostable and put the roasted coffee directly into the box. After a few months, this just didn’t feel right, so I sourced a plastic free, home compostable kraft bag to contain the beans in the box.
I know putting coffee in an unsealed kraft bag in a cardboard box is unconventional and goes against everything we know about storing fresh coffee, but that’s the point. In order to move towards a plastic free future, we need to think differently. We need to be a bit strange.

Plastic Free, Baby
Every coffee I roast is thoughtfully packaged in a home compostable, plastic free kraft bag and cardboard box. Our packaging is free of plastic coatings, aqueous layers, and forever chemicals. Made from post consumer recycled paper and cardboard certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and printed with water based soy ink.
High Level Sourcing
I source the highest quality, specialty grade arabica coffee on the planet and exclusively partner with top tier importers, farmers and producers who demonstrate the utmost ethical and responsible business practices. I roast each coffee to express their terroir and innate deliciousness, with an emphasis on approachable, balanced flavor profiles.
Plastic is a Problem
Many of the plastic products we use end up polluting our natural environments, destroying eco-systems and creating the ever present microplastic. Microplastics get into our drinking water, our food and our bodies. More and more research is finding that these microplastics are slowly poisoning us, altering our hormones and possibly leading to long term disease. It is time for a change.
